A Little Update on Kate

As most of you know, Kate was scheduled to have the polyps removed from her nose today.

We arrived at the hospital bright and early after partying all the previous day and night at Six Flags.  I didn't think I was going to be able to get any of us out of bed, but Kate and I got to the hospital even a  bit early.

She thought the gown with the opening in the back (and nothing on underneath) was quite hilarious.  She laughed and laughed and we had quite a good time while waiting, and waiting, and waiting.

Finally, they came and got her and she was such a trooper!  No tears of any sort.  None from Mom either. :)

The doctor said she did great and they removed the polyps from her nose and also some sort of callous type thing up in there.  Yes, he told me all the medical terms, but I didn't write it down.  He said everything was very inflamed up in there due to the allergies.  Anyway, she will be feeling kind of yucky for a few days, but as long as the bleeding stays with in normal, we don't have to go back for a couple of weeks.

I've mentioned before what a "wonderful" patient Kate is. Ahem. Right.  We would ask you to pray that she will cooperate with the nasal spray and medicines that she is suppose to take and that the bleeding/drainage would not increase.

Thank you for all who prayed for her surgery to go well and for me to not cry.  I didn't even have a lump in my throat or anything! :)

Our First "Staycation"

Monday we went to the Ft. Wayne Children's Zoo.  We loved it!  Better than the Indianapolis Zoo in some ways.  The whole place has a very jungle-like feel too it.  Mulch paths and mist sprayers through out made an extremely hot day a little more bearable.  The animals homes were situated so that the animals were much easier to see in some cases also.

this lion had been asleep right up against the glass when he suddenly stood up

Tuesday was Kate's visit to the allergist for her first set of allergy drops.  That took awhile longer than I thought, but it went well.  I am now a proud carrier of an Epi-pen. :)  It's only a precaution for anyone receiving shots/drops.  Since we had that appointment in the middle of the day it was pretty much just a "get some things done around here" day.

Cameron and Kate picking collard greens

Wednesday my awesome husband took the girls away right after breakfast so that I could get some sewing and school planning done.  I mostly planned 1st and 7th grade.  I did a little sewing, but after making a really stupid, although fixable, mistake, I just stuck to school planning.  I got a lot done and it felt really good.

Thursday we surprised the girls with a trip to the Children's Museum.  Callie was pretty disappointed that the Barbie exhibit had been replaced by a Hot Wheels exhibit, but Kate said that was her favorite part.  I imagine that Callie has just about outgrown that place, but she was the one who had been wanting to go so badly.  The highlight for me was seeing these guys trying to dust the Dale Chihuly glass sculpture.  I guess I won't complain about dusting for awhile. :)

Friday, Cameron and I celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary.  Some friends of ours kept the girls and Cameron and I went to the Cheesecake Factory.  We also picked up a couple of bookcases at a new antique store here in town. :)  He knows the way to my heart.  Cheesecake, a little shopping and he's letting his beard grown again. :)  What more could I want?

This - Very Full - Week

We have crammed a whole lot of fun into the last seven days.

We finally had "The Cousin Sleepover!"  Callie has been planning this for months.  I think it is very sweet how much she loves her two "girl cousins", as they are called around here.  They are four years younger than Callie, but they are like best friends.  Of course, Kate loves them too.

Kate had swimming lessons.  On Monday, there was lots of crying when it was time to jump off the diving board.  Today, she was jumping of her own free will and sad that lessons were over.  If only they lasted for three weeks, she might make a little more progress.  It takes her a week and half to get comfortable!

Callie turned in her 4H projects and received a blue ribbon for both.  Go Callie!  She did photography and miscellaneous crafts this year.  This was her second year doing photography, third year in 4H.  I think she was hoping for an honors ribbon this year and was a little disappointed.  She did a great job though on her poster and we took a little extra time looking at the ones that did get honors ribbons to see how she could maybe improve next year.

Saturday, Cameron and I went to a wedding that has been long anticipated and prayed for.  It was very beautiful.  Good friend's of ours kept the girls so they had fun there and we got a date!

Today we had friend over for dinner after church and had great conversation, food and fun.

Sorry, no pictures.  Too busy planning next weeks fun.  Cameron is off all week and we are having our very first "Staycation".  Let the fun begin!!

This Week

Kate started swimming lessons.  She was so excited.  She's been talking about them since the end of last summer's lessons.  She has a love/hate relationship with them though.  She hates the diving board and slide and these teachers don't take "no" for an answer.  They catch her at the bottom, but she still hates that part.

Callie got a new hair do too!  We should have done this months ago!!  You would not have believed the pile of hair on the floor.  If you've seen Princess Diaries where the guy brakes his brush on Anne Hathaway's hair then you know what Callie's hair is like.  THICK!

before

after--even after being slept on

We went to Kate's follow up appointment after her CT scan and allergy testing.  I was wrong when I told people she was allergic to 17 out of 33 things.  It was 19.  {Sigh}  These allergies are all inhalants and have irritated her nasal passages so much that there are now polyps.  One side of her airway is completely blocked and the other mostly.  No wonder the child is going around snorting!  So.....those have to be removed and allergy shots started.  Oh, she's going to love that.  It will be one in each arm.  Unless we do the drops.  That's still to be determined based on what insurance says.  I'm praying that we can do those instead!

Our air conditioner was out for about 48 hrs.  Man am I a wimp!!!  In my defense, only two of our downstairs windows will open, so it's not like we can get a good breeze coming in.  We were just very thankful that it wasn't last week when temps were over 100 degrees!   We were also very thankful that it was not an expensive repair.

We picked and ate our first homegrown cucumber.  I have a feeling pickle making is going to be in my future.  There are going to be a lot of cucumbers.

Tomorrow we are picking up the female cousins for a three night sleepover!  We have two very excited girls on our hands.

Summer So Far

Next up, swimming lessons for Kate, a hair cut for Callie, the "Cousin Sleepover", 4H fair, and who knows what else!

Finally

After living here for almost six years, we finally replaced the back door.

I really wanted to save the original door.  On the outside it had this really pretty.....I'm not sure what you call it, but a raised design.  It had so much character and it was unique.

Our first winter here, the wind blew so hard that the Plexiglas that someone had put in this door, actually popped out.  Maybe it was loose to begin with, who knows.  So we replaced that with real glass.  We probably could have saved the door if we had immediately primed and painted it, inside and out.  Quite honestly, there was (is) so much to do that we were just sort of paralyzed for a while.  You know, so much to do, don't know where to start, so we'll do nothing!

This past winter, while Cameron was out of town for four weeks, the combination of a torrential down pour and then freezing temps, resulted in my not being able to shut our door.  I kicked and pushed and banged, but it was so wet and frozen it just would not shut....or lock.  We just happen to know our own "Mr. Incredible" and he came over and shut that door so that no one would ever get it open again!  Or at least not until summer.  The paint started to come off on the inside too.

Mr. Incredible is also a very knowledgeable carpenter and he convinced me that although the door could be saved, it probably was not the best idea.

No wonder these floors are ice cold in the winter!  Look at that huge gap.

So fast forward a few months and here we are.  At the time of this writing, 11:12 PM, Cameron and a friend (who should be nominated for sainthood) are outside, cutting into these 100 year old walls to make the door fit.  You can see the original wood siding and the lath.  Notice the lack of insulation to be seen anywhere.  They are adding some of that too!  I can't wait to see what a difference this will make this winter.  We have a  new screen door that will be going on too.

We are very blessed to have a few friends who are willing and able to help with our questions and projects.  Besides Mr. Incredible and Mr. Saint, there is Mr. Inspector who answers our endless questions and gives good advice.  I think he was even under our crawlspace one time.  He should be nominated for sainthood too!

Thank you friends!

Indiana's Shortest Parade

For most of our 21 years of marriage we have gone to the Linton parade which boasts "Indiana's largest Fourth of July parade."  This year we found Indiana's shortest Fourth of July parade.  We headed north this year to Indiana Dunes and decided to go to the Porter, IN parade.  We found a shady spot and were kind of surprised that there weren't more people.  It started out with a small, but really good band, then a few fire trucks, a few other entry's and then, it was over!  It was actually great.  There were not  50 tractors and we didn't have to sit in the heat for two hours.

This part of Indiana, close to Chicago, is called "the Region"

From there we went to Indiana Dunes State Park to go swimming at the "beach".  The water was so cold and refreshing.  Apparently the rest of Northern Indiana thought so too.  I've never seen so many people at a beach!  Even a real ocean beach.  It was packed!  We didn't really care though and Callie and Kate certainly didn't care.  Our little fish had a ball and Callie has now seen more tattoos in one day than I have in all of my 41 years (and that was just on the women)!

We drove home a tired and stinky lot after filling our tummies with cheeseburgers and ice cream.

My Other Job

I love being a stay-at-home mom and teaching our children at home.  Even on our worst days, I only dream of living on a deserted island, not calling the local school and enrolling them. :)  Well, maybe once I did think of that, but it was brief.

That being said, when I got to know the owners of an antique mall and found out they needed weekend help, I jumped at the chance.  A little extra money has come in very handy around here and it is so much fun!

this is oneof two isles of the main floor

A couple of Saturdays a month I get paid to meet some very interesting people and look all day long at all kinds of antiques, vintage items and sometimes, junk.  One man's trash is another man's treasure though and you wouldn't believe what some people will buy!

this feather hat was purchased by an antique dealer from New York last weekend

I've mentioned before how ridiculously sentimental I can be.  You should have seen me the first few times I worked when I was surrounded by things that my grandparents had in their homes.  It was fun, but at the same time it did make me a little sad.

I've done pretty well at not spending all of my money there.  For the most part.  But every once in a while, I'll spy something that I just can't live without and that makes me absolutely giddy to have found.

My most recent treasure cost a whopping $10!  A couple of years ago I read about and saw pictures of paintings by an artist named Carl Larson.  I can't remember where I first read about him, but I loved his work.  It seems he's not that well known over here. The Indianapolis library did not have one book about him and they usually have every thing I have ever looked for.  I did order, from a website, a calendar with his work on it, but other than that I had never seen seen any products with his work.  While helping a customer looking for a bookcase, I saw this hanging on the wall.  The tag said "old frame with kitchen print $10.00".  I grabbed that picture as fast as I could!  I knew exactly where I would hang it in my kitchen.

In my opinion, it is so much more fun than shopping at a mall or big box store.  I've even found a relatively new cookbook that normally sells for $35 there.  I think I paid $14.  Not a thing was wrong with it.  For people who want to keep their money local, you pretty much can't get any more "local" than buying from shops like these.
If you've never been, you should go!  You never know what you may find.
